Thomas Connolly is Sligo’s oldest traditional Irish pub. There has been a pub here since 1780, opening onto Holborn Street. The Markievicz Road end was originally living quarters. First licensed in 1861, the pub came about during a time of plentiful maritime trade; deliveries of rope, linen and tea came into Sligo on ships from Europe. There was once a grocer’s shop at one end of the pub – popular for making sugar, selling tea and bottling whiskey. Highlights of the pub’s storied past include a visit from Charles Stewart Parnell, plus Thomas Connolly himself becoming Mayor of Sligo in 1890.
Our pub is unique in that it has two entrances, either end. The main entrance on Holborn Street (Dockers entrance), was home to dockyard workers and boatmen returning home from sea. The Markievicz road (Doctors entrance), saw professional clientele occupy one of our many snugs.
These days, our pub is best known for its famous pint of stout, wide range of drink options and live music. Generation after generation call us their local. Once labelled an ‘Old man’s pub’, we now see a mix of young and old with many tourists crossing the river from neighboring hotels.
We continue to invest in our range of drinks and live entertainment. We cater for our customer needs when it comes to sport. Our subscriptions allow us to show live sport simultaneously across three wide screen TVs in different areas of our pub.
When it comes to beverages, we have introduced many local and national Irish craft beers both on draught and in bottle. We have also introduced a premium whiskey offering of Irish, Scotch and Bourbon whiskies, with over 80 variations currently available. As part of our offering, we also do whiskey tasting trays and information sessions on request. We have also seen a growing demand for premium gin and so continued to invest in variations of Irish and International gins, premium drink mixers and a wide range of garnishes to finish. We have also hand selected several gins to form a premium gin tasting experience.
For those with allergies, we stock a range of gluten free beers and a range of non-alcoholic options. For the customer who enjoys hot drinks, we offer speciality coffees such an Irish, Baileys or Kahlua coffee, served with fresh cream. We are also happy to grind you a fresh espresso or make you a cappuccino with our unique 1938 100% Arabica coffee blend.
When it comes to live entertainment, we are proud to support and offer some of the best around. We currently have a full live music schedule seven nights a week through summer months, with music four nights a week annually. Our line-up encompasses Swing Jazz, Traditional Irish, Trad Fusion and acoustic sets from some of the region’s most recognised resident musicians. We publish and distribute posters and flyers of our live music schedule locally and run active online campaigns around updates to our listing, so our customers are kept well informed.
