Tom Callery has been working through the medium of clay for over twenty years. Originally from Kilkenny Tom moved to Sligo to study Fine Art in college and was immediately drawn in the direction of ceramics. After leaving college in 1993, he gained valuable experience working in the ceramic studio of Michael Kennedy in Sligo. He ultimately set up a studio with his wife Gráinne MacLoughlin called Breeogue Pottery Callery Ceramics in 1998. In 2006 Tom Callery Ceramics moved his work to a new studio near their home in Cloonamangh.
He has produced a consistent and significant body of ceramics, working mainly in Raku and porcelain. Land, sea, sky and nature’s ceaselessly changing patterns hues influence the themes of his work. He uses photography and sketches these images onto the clay surface, using subtle marks and etchings. He enjoys the challenge of capturing the mood and atmosphere of the the Irish landscape. He works intuitively and energetically and there is always an element of chance in his work which retains it spontaneity and freshness. Tom has exhibited internationally and nationally and have gained numerous awards for his work.
